Apparently in the Philippines some school districts have bought into the chess as sport position. From the post "Things I Miss" by A Cat in the Bag Waiting to Drown:
Playing chess every PE class. We had the option to play either chess or ball games in the field. My friends and I chose to lock ourselves in the classroom instead of running under the blazing hot sun.
